ASL Opportunity
If you have an interest in learning sign language, here is a fantastic opportunity.
Sign language is typically viewed as a way for deaf and hard of hearing people to communicate. However, studies show that bilingualism can help strengthen cognitive functioning. Students at Barry will have the opportunity to learn a second language and experience career exploration opportunities through the uses of American Sign Language.
Children and adults with autism find it difficult to speak when they’re experiencing sensory overload. In addition, some children with autism may begin speaking and then stop talking around age 2 or 3. Barry’s ASL CLUB will also be offered virtually to allow parents of students with Autism experiencing communication challenges. One of the key benefits of sign language for individuals with autism is the enhancement of communication skills. Sign language provides an alternate mode of communication that bypasses barriers of communication. Through the use of ASL, families can use signs to encourage students of Autism to express their thoughts, needs and emotions effectively at home and in school.
